MotoGP: First Free Practice round- Qatar

via Motosblog

Even with the world mourning the tragic disaster that took place in Japan less than a week ago, there seemed to be a positive glow amidst the paddocks. The team riders were feeling the need to express their heartfelt thoughts and prayers in various ways. Just for an example; Factory Yamaha‘s Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies will be displaying the message “with you Japan” on their M1’s all weekend, written in both English and Japanese and the Honda team held Japan’s National flag to show respect for the proud country.

It was a repeat of a repeat with Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner smoking the competition in Thursday night’s first free practice session in Qatar. The former Factory Ducati rider shared in finishing inside the 1’55 category along with teammate, Dani Pedrosa.

The real surprise of the evening was Mapfre Aspar Team Hector Barbera making an astounding entry into a 3rd position just after Dani Pedrosa.

San Carlo Gresini Honda’s Marco Simoncelli kept a good thing going after a promising prior weekend, by placing 4th  overall. He and his Honda crew made a few changes to his RC212V and tested a harder tyre with the climate changes; the coiffured rider exited the tarmac with greater sense of confidence for Sunday.

Placing 5th, Marlboro Ducati’s Valentino Rossi had a much better experience by concentrating on making specific improvements to his GP11, delivering the charismatic Italian the best lap time to date.

Resident Factory Yamaha 2010 World Champion, Jorge Lorenzo reverted back to his old set-up from last year after feelings of frustration from last weeks testing at the desert track. The classic set-up gave the Majorcan an “at home” feeling of comfort and improved on his lap time placing 7th, despite teammate and Factory newcomer Ben Spies beating him out 6th place by a tenth of a second.
